Here we go!!! After taking plenty of time leaving our northern Indiana starting point we managed to avoid most of the Monday morning rush hour. We parked at the Grant Street South parking lot ($18.00! - Got to love big city pricing...not), walked to the three signs close by (the OLD 'Route 66 Starts Here' sign, the NEWISH 'Route 66 Stats Here' sign and the 'Route 66 Ends here' sign, and took the obligatory photos. I couldn't believe how many other people were doing the same thing! This was fun!
We were disappointed
that Lou Mitchell's ('World's Best Coffee!') was closed on Mondays and
Tuesdays so no free Milk Duds or doughnut holes...or great breakfast.
We followed the directions in the EZ 66 Guide, as well as the 66 road
signs, and had no problems getting out of Chicago.
Our next stop was Dell Rhea's Chicken. It's time for lunch!! Everywhere we go there are signs that COVID has had an impact. Dell Rhea's was no exception with a big white tent in the front, obviously for outside dining. Today is too chilly for that and we want the full experience so in we go, safely vaccinated and masked. We started with an appetizer of fried corn fritters which were served with a pitcher of honey. These are so good and should have been saved for dessert but we just couldn't! And, yum, their fried chicken really is great!
